INTERPRETING
Interpreting is to orally translate a message from one language to another. There are different types of interpreting, for example, consecutive, simultaneous and liaison interpreting.
CHARACTERISTICS OF INTERPRETING
➤ Interpreting is to orally transfer meaning from one language to another for a listener or a group of listeners who would otherwise not understand. Working with interpreters allows speakers to express themselves confidently and accurately in their mother tongue, with the knowledge that a professional interpreter will faithfully convey their message (AIIC, 2019).
➤ An interpreter creates a bridge between two or more languages and cultures, and enables communication between people who do not speak the same language. Interpreters are more than bilingual professionals; they are language and culture experts who abide by a Code of Conduct that ensures, among other things, good quality interpretations, strict confidentiality and impartiality.
➤ There are different types of interpreting, such as consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, liaison interpreting and remote interpreting. The need to use one type of interpreting or another will depend on the specific characteristics of your event. For more information, see the pages for each type of interpretation.
